If you buy only one thing for summer, you’re bound to get the most bang for your buck with a pair of roughed-up denim shorts. Not since the triumphant return of the legging has there been a more versatile, surprise gotta-have-it item make such a bold return to closets everywhere. I bought these from American Eagle last month, and have paired them with tights, boots, and a blazer for many an occasion while I wait for the weather to warm up. And when it finally does, I can’t wait to wear them all summer long with breezy blouses and lightweight knits for a polished, yet deconstructed look. Everything about these shorts, from the inseam (not super-short!), to the distressing, and the price make these a perfect pick for a closet staple.

I’m in serious love with this Fairisle Vest from American Eagle. With its stand up collar and extra-long length, you won’t just beat the cold with this super-chunky sweater vest, you’ll also look super stylish and sweetly retro, too. What I love most of all, however, is its versatility. A vest this neutral and cozy can be paired with most items that are likely already in your closet – long sleeve tees, leggings, jeans, trousers, even skirts and turtlenecks for a smarter approach to winter dressing.
And to make a sweet vest even sweeter, American Eagle is now offering 50% off one item, when you buy another. Oh, and even better – all orders over $100 gets $5 2-day shipping, just in time for Christmas. So if you’re in need of a little warmth for roasting chestnuts by an open fire (or whatever you choose to do this holiday season), make sure you’re doing it both in style and without spending a fortune.
Like most chicks who grew up during the 80s and 90s, I had a major thing for My So-Called Life. There was just something about that show that struck a chord with me – the angst, the crushes, the style – and I’ve never forgotten how understood I felt just by watching every Thursday night. And just how cool were Angela’s flannel shirts and oversized sweaters? And those Doc Martens! I thought I’d die if I couldn’t get the same ones that Rayanne wore. Despite attending a school with a strict dress code, I did everything in my power to get by with the only style for me, thus, I dressed like a homeless person for much of 1994.
The show has long been gone (has anyone figured out why it was ever cancelled?!), but suddenly I’ve noticed a resurgence of flannel shirts. Perhaps it’s tribute to the show that helped many of us deal with our teenage problems? Whatever the case, I’m seriously digging the latest styles emerging from designers high and low alike. What do you think of my top pick from American Eagle? It’s perfectly tailored, with just a hint of that 90s grunge I loved so much. And at $39.50, it’s a shirt I’m willing to spring for. Even if there’s no chance of Jordan Catalano coming back.
Colder weather isn’t something I look forward to after a lovely summer of sleeveless dresses and sandals, but I hold a special place in my heart for the cozy sweaters and scarves that come with the new season. Forever on the hunt for soft knits at budget-friendly prices, I tend to resist buying anything too quickly or else my closet will begin to resemble a furry monster.
This cardigan, however, is so doing it for me. Priced under $40 from American Eagle, it’s almost cashmere-soft and such a bright way to keep your outfits fresh for the chilly months ahead. Topped with a too-cold-for-fall sleeveless dress at work or jeans and a tee at the weekend, I’m stocking up for winter…just like a hibernating bear.
