Ooh la la.

August 26th, 2009 by Ruth

Exclusive, invitation only, Ruelala.com, hosts boutiques selling premiere-brands at attainable prices. Visit daily to get your window shopping fix or to purchase an unexpected gem. My affinity for gold shines through in my favorite ooh la la moment. After achieving a goal, I rewarded myself with a Kenneth Jay Lane Crocodile Watch, CC Skye Ryder Hinge Bracelet and ”Gizeh” Birkenstocks in Gold Leather. $150 later, I’ve never received so many compliments on an accessory as I do when I wear these pieces. Hopefully you have a friend to send you a Ruelala.com invite, if not, let us know and we’d be more than happy to send you one!

Genius!

August 25th, 2009 by Catherine

Have you ever caught sight of a celebrity and gone gaga for their outfit? With their access to stylists and bigger shopping budgets, they’ve just got such a knack for putting together incredible looks, most often outside of my clothing (and food and rent combined) budgets.

This is why I’m going bananas over InStyle.com’s genius feature Look for Less, where a celebrity look is broken down into much, much more affordable items, complete with online retailer. Sure, you’re not putting together the exact same outfit, but knowing how little you’ve spent on getting celebrity-chic should make you sleep a little better at night. No fake prescription drugs needed.

Don’t judge me, but…

0359_5161_413Do you remember how fly Madonna looked in her “Don’t Tell Me” video? I’ve never really recovered from how great she looked in her western gear. Listen, I know she wasn’t the first to introduce the idea of western gear as street wear, but that hasn’t stopped me from still breaking out my favorite denim shirt when I’m feeling a little western-y.

Well, said denim shirt is a little worse for wear now and it’s definitely time for an upgrade. You can’t imagine how stoked I was to come across this shirt from American Eagle. Priced right at $44, it’s long enough to fit my long torso and worn-in enough to look like I was the one who introduced Madonna to the trend. Just please don’t tell me to stop ever wearing this shirt…

A sneaker for all seasons.

August 20th, 2009 by Catherine

_5531492I first fell in love with Converse sneakers as an intern at Family Circle, when the Fashion Editor included a pair with a cute black dress and denim jacket for a shoot on Summer-to-Fall fashions. It just struck me how chic the whole look was, without fancy footwear. I tried the look myself later in the season and haven’t stopped wearing my black and white Chuck Taylors since. They’ve long been a fashion staple to the masses, but in case any of you dear Chic Thrills readers haven’t yet taken a walk in those shoes, perhaps now’s the time! Get them here for $39.95.

Found: Perfect summer-to-fall work skirt.

August 19th, 2009 by Catherine

gp620806-00vliv01As the summer nears its end, I can’t help but want to hold on to the season as long as possible. While browsing in the Gap this weekend, I came across this lovely skirt that will look fab against my tanned legs now, but equally chic with some tights and boots come fall. I adore the bow belt and pockets and it slightly reminds me of Shelley Long’s getups in Troop Beverly Hills. Khaki chic is quite clearly here to stay…

Marked down to $24.99 from $44.50, it’s on sale now, but surely won’t last long so snatch yours up quickly!

Swatch this!

August 4th, 2009 by Catherine

_5708928An old friend of mine always looks super chic, but has confessed to me many a time that she spend an absolute fortune on her wardrobe. When we first met, I assumed her Prada handbag was on loan from Bag, Borrow or Steal, but quickly learned that there’s no borrowing or stealing in her life. No, no. This girl is an owner-a-plenty.

She recently showed up for brunch wearing an incredible gold watch I instantly assumed would be a Rolex. “What do you think?” she asked me, holding up her wrist. “It’s really nice!” I replied just as she blurted out “I got it at Swatch!”.

Huh? Swatch? As in the land of bright, plastic watches?

No kidding.

A far cry from the watches I wore (3 or more on the same wrist, natch), this one screamed sophistication and class. Perfectly oversized, the watch instantly upgrades an outfit from snooze-y to swanky. Add a gold bracelet for a little flair to call it a day!

A better bridal shower.

July 31st, 2009 by Catherine

Like most women, you’ve probably lost count of how many bridal and baby showers you’ve attended over the years. And if you’re part of the lucky club who is close to said bride/baby mama, you’ve probably had the honor of hosting and throwing their blessed celebration. Tired of spending a fortune? Rethink what it means to throw an elegant party. Schedule the event earlier in the day and make it clear on your invitations that it’s a tea party. Keep drinks to tea, coffee and water perked up with cucumber, lemon or other fruit garnishes, and go wild baking a bunch of simple cookies or cupcakes. For some simple recipes, head on over here

Movie night.

July 30th, 2009 by Catherine

With the weekend just around the corner and a slew of new releases slated for tomorrow, I’m itching to escape summer’s sultry nights with a good flick. One of the best ways to save a buck on crazy movie prices? Bring your own snacks! Would you pay $8 for a soda at the grocery store? Probably not. And who really wants to have slimy fingers from movie theater popcorn? Is it wrong? Eh, maybe. Am I saving my hard-earned money? Absolutely, therefore totally worth it.

Nail it.

Can’t live without your weekly mani/pedi? That little indulgence can really add up over the course of a year, so why not try skipping one professional treatment with an at-home touch up? Your savings will quickly mount, and I’m willing to bet few people will even notice the difference. If you simply can’t bear facing the world with a chipped manicure, consider salons that offer clients a “frequent flyer” program, with offers for free services when you amass a certain number of visits.

Take note.

If you’re anything like me, you love savoring a good book. But is the $20-some worth something you’ll probably read just once? Probably not. With libraries offering the very same bookstore options for free, it’s a wonder we tend to skip them in favor of purchasing the exact same item. I’ve always found that bookstores tend to display their goods much more prominently, so whenever I’m looking for a new novel, I’ll pop by and make a note of books that appeal to me before heading to my local library. That way, I save the cash and assure myself I’m not missing out on anything new and noteworthy!
