Eat here: Otto Enoteca Pizzeria
January 5th, 2011 by RuthHomemade apple pie.
December 14th, 2010 by RuthThere’s nothing I love more than making homemade apple pie from apples plucked fresh from the farm. I sliced these guys super thin, coated with a tich of sugar, layered into a store-bought pie crust and finished with two bags of delicious special crumb mix. Now, you know how I feel about CRUMB. It should be big, clumpy, mountains of pure sugarary goodness. This particular topping came straight from a craft show vendor. Of course, I don’t remember where I got or who I bought it from but once I find it again, I promise to post about it with in depth details.
Giving back isn’t expensive.

I had the pleasure of meeting the fabulous AHAlife CEO Shauna Mei, and am thrilled that she is supporting the Girl Scouts of America. As a former cub, I plan to donate $25 to The Girl Scouts Career Exploration Program via AHAlife. All funds are being donated to the Girls Scouts of America’s mission of teaching and leadership. This program helps at-risk girls beat the odds, become empowered through field visits from various corporate companies, one-on-one time with real women, guest speakers and more.
It’s an added bonus that AHAlife will be sending me my coveted Thin Mints 3 months before anyone else gets them! Can’t wait to get them!
The stuffed mushroom.
November 19th, 2010 by Ruth
One night, we wanted to make stuffed mushrooms with minimal calories. We tossed some onions, vegetarian crumbles, a roasted red pepper, and onion straws together in the pan and stuffed it into baked mushrooms. Sprinkled it with some artisanal pecorino cheese, boom, we’re good to go. Paired with a complex Coten du Rhone, life is complete.
Sunshine on a cloudy day.
November 17th, 2010 by Ruth
We’ve been having some dreary weather as of late and I decided to brighten things up with this Tucker for Target dress. Purchased for a $8 from the Target clearance rack, this might be my best steal ever. The Nine West booties were purchased at the Jersey Outlet for $50. Bringing sunshine to my cloudy day, the store manager informed me that I could get a second pair for $25. Obviously, I was sold! Now, I own them in camel, black patent and gray! Stay tuned for their debuts!
Bake off: Banana Nut Muffins
November 16th, 2010 by Ruth
I baked these delightful Banana Walnut Muffins one lazy Sunday. Thanks to some added apple sauce, they were soft and perfectly moist. Instead of white sugar, I used raw and threw in an extra banana for good measure. Oh, and I ALWAYS add vanilla extract to these muffins.
Honor.
November 11th, 2010 by RuthWe live in a fast paced world where we rarely slow down and I’m convinced that this is why we have national holidays. We need to be reminded to think, ponder, and speculate. On Veterans Day, I wonder, what would this country be if we did not have those who are willing to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Would Japan have taken over? Would all Jews have perished during the Holocaust? Would Sadam still roam about? Would my mother be who she is today had she not been an army brat and lived in Japan, Albuquerque, and Las Vegas? Would her brother be a different person had he not served? Would my grandfather be as wise as he was had he not served? Would I not have a caring, strong and focused man in my life had he not served?
I ask myself these questions on a daily basis. I am grateful for those who serve, defend and protect; they have given us a priceless gift, freedom. I’m also grateful to those close to me who have served. Without the experience, they would not be who they were or are today. Thank you.

Steady.
November 7th, 2010 by RuthAs the blue peeks through the wisps of white and lucent corals and salmons, I’m consumed with a feeling of bliss. The intense glow calms my senses and immediately, I feel my life slow down. I can feel happiness, elation and appreciation for everything I have. And I’m not talking big, materialistic things because I don’t have those. I’m talking small things that don’t have a price tag yet, they are valuable.
My sweet dog; healthy family; close friends; my empowering job; my cozy home; fresh flowers; fallen leaves; the park; lazy Sundays; and my ability to rebuild and recreate happiness and a new life. While I aspire to acquire a house, car, and one day, a Birkin (hey, you only live once), I am grateful for these things and continue to remind myself that while under this sky, slow and steady win the race.

Piazza Sempione.
October 30th, 2010 by RuthAs I entered the Piazza Sempione Spring/Summer 2011 preview, I immediately felt comfortable as the subdued palette calmed my senses. The soft greys, lily, beiges, washed blues and milk tones popped with splashes of egg yolk and acid yellow.
A masculine-inspired line, the pieces are versatile, feminine and elegant. With this collection, it’s all about the details. From stencil print shirt dresses and graphic printed tunics to basket-weaved cardigans and textured skirts, the collection exudes sophistication.
When we were told to style a look as the Italian design team was interested in seeing their line from an American perspective, I was thrilled. I was immediately drawn to a navy tunic and dropped crotch slim pants in lily. Of course, the queen of accessorizing, I paired it with a long necklace, leather clutch and gorgeous pair of flats.
How gorgeous is this color palette? Love all the textures and luxurious fabric.
