Empowerment by Dermalogica.

March 18th, 2011 by Ruth

I never realized what a big deal International Women’s Day (IWD) was until I worked on a client project surrounding the cause. Who knew that on March 8, women worldwde took celebrate the economic and social achievements of women. As an American citizen living in Brooklyn, New York and working in New York City, I am quick to forget that not all are blessed with the accommodations, freedom, and luxuries that I have and my naivete takes over me.

This IWD, I was fortunate enough to celebrate with Jane Wurwand, the Founder and Owner of Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute. Raised by a widowed mother, she and her three sisters learned the importance of utilizing their educations to the fullest extent and empowering themselves to establish secure futures.

Fortunately, Jane was successful enough to build a stable business and foundation that allows her to actively support organizations that empower women and girls. Taking her passion a step further, Jane founded Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship (FITE) for women around the world, a global empowerment platform powered by Kiva.org, the nonprofit leader in microfinance.

Did you know that women are traditionally more likely to be denied a loan by a bank and often face high levels of financial discrimination? Raised by parents who taught me I can always succeed, my mother empowered me to take control of my finances and helped me set up a savings account at the ripe age of 7. It took me a while to understand, but not everyone has a mother encouraging their daughter to become independent.

In fact, 70% of people who live below the poverty line are women while 66% of the world’s work is performed by women and we still see the glass ceiling. In order to figuratively break this dome, we need to empower women worldwide to become financially independent.

To make a difference, purchase a FITE-sleeved Dermalogica product and redeem your code. On your behalf, Dermalogica will donate a $1 microloan to a female entrepreneur in the country of your choice. After a few weeks, you’l receive information about the entrepreneur who is benefiting from your action.

Keeping the puzzle together.

February 24th, 2011 by Ruth

I’ve committed myself. Not to the asylum. But to getting my butt into shape and loosing those few extra pounds, and within the next two months. You wouldn’t believe it, but today, I just said no to a FRENCH FRY. This is coming from a former fat kid who asked for a bag of McDonalds french fries for my 12th birthday. Enough said.

Clearly, I am watching what I eat. Never a calorie counter, I now use my Weight Watchers Points calculator in tandem with the Lichi Super Fruit Diet. Powered by super- fruit and antioxidant lychee, the supplement reduces visceral (stomach area) fat and increases energy and fat oxidation. Additionally, I spin, take core strengthening classes, hot vinyasa and bikram classes four times a week.

If I keep these pieces of the puzzle connected for two months, I’m confident that I will feel comfortable in my skimpy two piece by Mother’s Day. Stay tuned for updates!

Sweetest things.

January 12th, 2011 by Ruth

There are some people who literally need to quit their day job. Sometimes, even when you’re great at your career, you need to realize your full potential and pursue dreams. Case in point, my friend, Renata of Really Renata has this incredible talent to decorate, organize, and has a knack for craft. Investing in fancy machines that cut patterns, glue, snip, transfer, seal, and stitch, she’s become an artisan of paper making. After taking a few shots of her and her future husband, she sent the above note cards as a thank you. These are the sweetest things.

A macaron moment.

January 7th, 2011 by Ruth

A few weeks ago, I was delighted when I received a box of colorful macarons from my dear friend, Robin West of And Your Bird Can Sing. A rainbow of pastels, the pink, orange, green, beige and brown rainbow was a feast for the eyes. Straight from Anna-Marie Farrier’s Little Oven bakery, the delicate sandwiches of rich creams and chocolates playfully danced on my palate. Ranging from traditional flavors to boutique creations including olive oil, balsamic vinegar, pumpkin pie and earl grey, these macaron morsels are a perfect treat.

Homemade apple pie.

December 14th, 2010 by Ruth

There’s nothing I love more than making homemade apple pie from apples plucked fresh from the farm. I sliced these guys super thin, coated with a tich of sugar, layered into a store-bought pie crust and finished with two bags of delicious special crumb mix. Now, you know how I feel about CRUMB. It should be big, clumpy, mountains of pure sugarary goodness. This particular topping came straight from a craft show vendor. Of course, I don’t remember where I got or who I bought it from but once I find it again, I promise to post about it with in depth details.
