This season, cropped jackets are hot, hot, hot. This Captain Glam Jacket is incredibly chic and a must-have for anyone keeping up with current trends. Its silver sequin details and mandarin collar are both flattering and a welcome update to my other black jacket. The three-quarter sleeves meet at the flap pockets found on the waist, making it glamorous and chic. However, at $368, the jacket was a distant dream.

At $168, the Free People “Officer’s” Blazer” available at Bloomingdales.com, is a total steal. Made of rich merino wool, this military-inspired blazer is embellished with rope trim and decorative gold buttons. I absolutely love this standing collar with the detailed badge and the discreet hook-and-eye snaps.

After a weekend of playing in my mom’s jewelry box, I became inspired to collect and wear more vintage costume pieces. Costume jewelry are pieces of the past that add pizazz and beauty to any outfit. Thanks to a recent Real Simple issue, I came across RubyLane.com, an e-commerce site dedicated to vintage collectible costume jewelry.

All these exquisite vintage necklaces, brooches and belt buckles can be found on the web site and are all available for under $100. Go ahead, make a statement by incorporating pieces of the past into your look. Do you have a favorite vintage gem you wear? If so, we’d love to hear.

Target for Halloween: Not so scary deals

October 5th, 2009 by Catherine

43077With lots of buzz about Halloween, I’m already frazzled about what to do for a costume of my own. My friends are all much, much more creative than I and produce the wildest ensembles, far beyond the scope of my imagination. So while I put on my thinking cap to determine what I should be this year, why don’t you chime in with ideas of your own?

But just in case you get stuck (like I very likely will), Target’s got you covered. With over 5,000 costume options to choose from, there’s bound to be something that suits your style. Oh, and better still, they’ll throw in free shipping to save you the hassle of sorting through the pirates and superheroes. Sure beats going as Wilma Flinstone for the third year in a row!

Ride ‘em.

Ralph Lauren

I’ve been pining over these chic Ralph Lauren Black Label Harrison Riding Pants forever. I imagined myself wearing them with riding or Frye boots and a warm cozy sweater on a chilly day. However, I knew I had to get real and forget about them because at $700, it was only a dream – that is, until I found its fraternal twin!

Lands' End

Thanks to Lands’ End, my dreams came true. With the Audrey Slim Leg Stretch Cavalry Twills,  I can get the look for a whole lot less – I’m talking $55!  This domesticated version of the riding pant has height-enhancing verticle pintucks, offset front pockets, and a decorative black buckle making it perfect for my style and my bank account.

Bello Bolero Jacket

September 9th, 2009 by Ruth

Picture 6Lucky for my bank account, the latest fall fashions have not tickled my fancy but this gorgeous Bolero Jacket from Top Shop did the trick. Recently added to my short Hanukkah list, this embellished jacket with lush colored sequins, has started my must-have list. Green with envy and passionate with purple, this proper cropped jacket is the final touch to a laid back pair of skinny jeans and plain tank. For $240, I will feel like a million bucks this season.

Be it a thumb, index or middle finger, you can make a fashion statement without investing two month’s salary – or even an hour’s!

Ooh la la.

August 26th, 2009 by Ruth

Exclusive, invitation only, Ruelala.com, hosts boutiques selling premiere-brands at attainable prices. Visit daily to get your window shopping fix or to purchase an unexpected gem. My affinity for gold shines through in my favorite ooh la la moment. After achieving a goal, I rewarded myself with a Kenneth Jay Lane Crocodile Watch, CC Skye Ryder Hinge Bracelet and ”Gizeh” Birkenstocks in Gold Leather. $150 later, I’ve never received so many compliments on an accessory as I do when I wear these pieces. Hopefully you have a friend to send you a Ruelala.com invite, if not, let us know and we’d be more than happy to send you one!

Fraternal Fashion Twins

August 24th, 2009 by Ruth

There are plenty of fraternal twins within the fashion world. To most people, two dresses can look identical; they have similar designs, shapes, fabrics and patterns, however, one of them can find a home in your closet without dipping into your savings account.

Case in point; I’ve been eyeing the hot Gryphon dress on the left for months now. Perfect for a night event, this $390 crinkled wool blend Gryphon Belted Crinkle Plaid Henley Dress is cinched at the waist with a bold metal buckle. However, my love affair ended when I spied a fraternal twin in the Alloy catalogue.

Evoking memories of my childhood, I devoured every skinny, waif, long-haired look in the book. To my surprise, I stumbled upon this Plaid Shirt Dress. Similar to the Grypon dress, the Alloy look-a-like, also cinched at the waist, has a similar plaid pattern, sleeve and dress length. Available for a fraction of the price, by removing the fabric strip and adding your favorite funky belt, you can make this $40 look your own and stash some cash for the night out.
