December 31st, 2009 by Catherine

champagne_glassesAs 2009 draws to a close, we here at Chic Thrills couldn’t help but take a moment to look back on this past year. After a year of planning, brainstorming, disagreeing, agreeing, saving, spending and learning, our launch in August was nothing but a labor of love. Rachel Rachel Roy Handbag, $58.99

Rachel Rachel Roy Handbag, $58.99

When on a tight budget, it can be tough (or, perhaps in some cases, suffocating) to stick with a budget. It’s a complaint I frequently hear from my girlfriends who are switching jobs, or even just entering a new field, when they can’t really afford to update their wardrobes to fit the dresscode of a new office. But it can be fairly simple to make major upgrades with a minimal budget. Case in point? This classic bag from Rachel Roy’s collection for Macy’s. Its timeless shape and minimal hardware make it ideal for those preferring to not splash a lot of cash on accessories, but still need to look polished and professional. That’s the thing about dressing for work – if you can find high quality, affordable pieces, there’s just no need to drop thousands of dollars on a complete wardrobe overhaul. Key pieces, like this handbag here, will make you look like a million bucks.

Sweet treat for New Year’s Eve.

December 30th, 2009 by Catherine

I’ve already mentioned my indifference towards New Year’s Eve, but that doesn’t stop me from appreciating a good idea when I see one. As a subscriber to DailyCandy‘s emails, I’m often treated to great advice and even greater finds from around the country. Today’s D.C. edition featured suggestions from event planner Maria Cooke, with thoughts on throwing a memorable New Year’s Eve party. So, what exactly does a pro have to offer for the last night of the year? Check them out after the jump! (more…)

Daily Diamond: Coink Piggy Bank by Mint

December 30th, 2009 by Catherine

One of my favorite ways to save money without noticing a bank account deficit, is to stash all my loose change in a jar, then cash it in at the end of the year. Apart from noticing that my purse is a little lighter than usual, I never mind not having exact change. In fact, the more change I collect on my day-to-day purchases, the better off my savings account will be! This year, I added approximately $200 to my account!

And while a regular glass jar suits my needs just fine, there may be some of you out there who would prefer something a little less old-school-beer-fund in design. Might I suggest this adorable grown-up piggy bank? Its funnel top makes stashing your loose change easy peasy (who has time to put their coins away one by one?), and its simple design would look right at home anyplace in your abode. Besides, with a face like that, how could you not remember to fill him up with coins every day?

Oh, and to sweeten things up a bit, the W Hotels Store is throwing in free shipping and 30% off its purchase price with promo code D6T8V, now through January 10th. Happy savings!

Holly, jolly holiday dressing.

Converse One Star Women's Tie Skirt, $26.99

Converse One Star Women's Tie Skirt, $26.99

With the holidays just about behind us, I’m definitely feeling the pinch, and it’s not coming from my wallet. With Christmas eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day (we’re Brits – we can’t have the holidays without celebrating on the 26th, too), my boyfriend’s and dad’s birthdays falling on the 15th and 29th of December all behind me now, I’ve just got to get through New Year’s Eve and I can properly get back on track to eating healthfully again. But until I trim down my champagne-induced, post-holiday padding, I’ve got this skirt to keep me looking fab. Not only does its high, cinched waistline cover a multitude of sins, but it also looks super chic and ladylike, and at $26.99, I can’t help but gloat about its affordability, too. I wore my skirt to dinner last night with a black C&C California turtleneck and got rave reviews from my family, but I’m curious about how you’d wear a skirt like this. Chime in with your thoughts below!

Really?

December 29th, 2009 by Ruth

I’m not one to write about something if it’s not positive but in this case, I think it’s worth chatting about. I mean, really, Lindsay Lohan, really? Why are you going to waste your time expanding 6126, your trashtastic leggings line, into a full clothing line? I just don’t get it!

After your failed fashion design attempt with Ungaro and the stalled sales of 6126, why waste your time? I’m not one to wish ill things on people so I wish you luck and much success in revamping your flawed image.

For a good laugh, follow Lindsay Lohan on Twitter.

Apiece Apart Cashmere Duster, Mick Margo, $867

Apiece Apart Cashmere Duster, Mick Margo, $867

Designed for a lifetime of wear, Apiece Apart creates basics pieces with the intention of pairing your wardrobe down to a few key mix-and-match wearables. Produced in New York City by Laura Cramer and Starr Hout, these designers have built a cult following of celebrities including Maggie Gyllenhaal.

This stunning 3/4 sleeve Duster is made of a cashmere wool blend and would be a beautiful addition to anyone’s closet. I imagine wearing it in warmer weather with my favorite pair of jeans and new Cole Haan flats. However, available at Mick Margo for $867, it’s light years away for me – sigh…

Not so Nutella.

CAROB

Like my mother, I have the BIGGEST sweet tooth. Not a day goes by when I don’t consider sacrificing nutritional foods for calorie-packed chocolate sweets. Whether it’s a homemade upside down salty chocolate chip cookie, a piece of Fran’s Gray & Smoked Salt Caramels, or a pack of M&Ms, like Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, “I want it now!”

However, I can not continue to avoid getting into my jeans and fitted clothing for the rest of the season and must watch my weight. That said, from here on out, I promise to watch what I eat and when that craving does come along, I’ll opt for something healthier such as Carobit Carob Spread

A healthy alternative to chocolate, Carobit Carob Spread is packed with calcium and contains no gluten, milk, caffeine, cocoa, trans fats or artificial ingredients. Perfect on a piece of toast, salty cracker or just on a spoon, this delicious spread is rich and flavorful and extinguishes my chocolate cravings.

I highly suggest giving this alternative a try.

Drink up.

Leaf Teacup and Saucer, ZipperGifts.com, $16

Leaf Teacup and Saucer, ZipperGifts.com, $16

For the past few days, I’ve been trying hard to kick a cold before it turns into something worthy of a doctor visit. And, surprisingly enough – mission accomplished! My secret? Drinking plenty of hot Theraflu and tea and sucking on more than my fair share of Zicam.

During this time, I realized that there is nothing more comforting than a favorite tea cup or coffee mug. It brings a sense of warmth, encouraging you to slow down, cuddle up, and drink more liquids. Luckily for me, I received the above tea cup as a gift earlier this holiday season.

It has all the bells an whistles of an important cup. It’s wide enough for a two hand grip; deep enough for about two servings of liquid; and creates a calming mood with smooth textured grooves and a zen color.

If you want to stay well this cold, cough and flu season, make sure you are armed with a favorite tea cup or mug.
