Hulu (.com) hoop.

November 20th, 2009 by Ruth

hulu-logoThis weekend, watch any episode from any TV network than you can possibly imagine. With less commercials than the episodes found on the network’s web site, Hulu.com is a free service with live streaming videos. For those of you who are not down with techy lingo (me included), that means that there is no waiting to download the episode or use your computer’s valuable memory space.

Channeling your inner chicksate, Hulu is a FREE alternative to Blockbuster and Netflix,  Hulu.com allows you to watch the missed episodes or revisit oldies. My favorite application is the movie feature. I can catch those old flicks such as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or finally find out what all the True Blood hoopla is all about.

Now this is chic thinking!

Onyx Candle by Sage, $58.00

I won’t discriminate against most candles, but every now and then one comes along that just knocks my socks off. Sage’s Onyx Candle does just that every single time I light it. Made with a blend of vanilla and coconut, it’s not overpoweringly sweet since it’s also infused with the scent of tobacco and oakmoss. Check it out here for $58.00.

The Sartorialist – The Art of the Burberry Trench.

November 20th, 2009 by Ruth

While perusing through The Sartorialist, I found that Scott Schuman brought my love of the trench to life with his portraits. With the tortious shell glasses and serious look on his face, the man looks incredibly sexy and mysterious while bundled up in his trench. Not only do I want to know what he’s thinking, but I want to know where he’s off to. Is it a poetry reading or a business lunch?

With her boyfriend rolled jeans, stunning leather shoes, and wind blown hair, the girl carrying the potted lillies strikes my interest. She is fashion forward yet there’s a little bit of a chicskate in her as she’s buying a potted plant, looking for the flowers to bring her happiness for a period of time longer than fresh cut flowers.

I appreciate Scott’s love for fashion and his ability to bring the personality of the chic trench to life.

Fact or fiction?

November 20th, 2009 by Catherine

We’ve mentioned before our friendship with Women’s Health editor Alexis Farah, and while her work with the Coalition for the Homeless is noteworthy, it’s her work at the magazine that we get overly excited about. This morning she was on New York’s PIX Morning News, debunking common beauty myths. Give yourself an education by checking out her segment here

Speaking of myths, what’s the craziest ones you’ve ever heard? My mom used to insist I ate the crusts on my bread so that I’d have curly hair. Seriously, ma? Chime in with your own silly stories below!

Baby we were born to run.

Heel to Toe Foot File, $2.89

Heel to Toe Foot File, $2.89

This weekend marks a milestone in my life, as I embark on a 26.2 mile journey through Philadelphia. Marathon day has finally arrived! And although I’m super antsy about the race itself, I’m more concerned about the state of my feet when the miles are clocked. Runners have reported epic blisters, chronic calluses and even (eek!) lost toenails through their training. Gross! I love running, but I’d like to keep my feet from ever looking like they’ve been to hell and back. My weapon of choice for fighting the “ick factors”? A $3 foot file from Sally Beauty Supply. It’s got two sides to help me combat any unwanted roughness, and is the only tool I’ve found that can take on my runners’ feet. Sure, it takes a little bit of elbow grease on my part, but when I weigh that against the cost of a pedicure every couple weeks, I’m okay with putting in a dash of effort each morning in the shower.

And while we’re on the subject, are any of you Chic Thrills readers dedicated runners, too? How do you treat your feet after workouts? I’ve mentioned before my top picks for foot creams, but is there anything I’m missing? There’s nothing less chic that gnarly-looking feet, so if you’ve got some tips, throw them at us here. We’ll post our favorite money-saving pedicure ideas next week in a post-marathon trial wrap up!
