I know a number of people who have been fortunate enough to recently purchase new homes. Naturally, I’ve also been invited to a number of housewarming parties with no clue what to give, other than the standard bottle of wine, until I spoke to my best friend, Patty.

Patty’s family is notorious for gifting elephant figurines. Seen as a symbol of strength and power, elephants (and some say those only with a raised trunk) are perceived as source of good luck. Thanks to Patty, I’m going to bring good luck and fortune to my new home owner friends.

Above are a few of our favorites.

MOR Cosmetics Marshmallow Body Cream

MOR Cosmetics Marshmallow Body Cream, $34.00

My normally happy skin took a turn for the driest this week and I’m none too pleased with the results. I’ve got the scratchiest back and legs that look like they haven’t seen moisture in years. So not cute. This kind of itchiness doesn’t usually happen until mid-January, so if my current skin situation is any indication of things to come, I’m in deep trouble. With this in mind, I’ve stocked up on a couple sweet emergency treats from MOR Cosmetics. Their Marshmallow Body Cream is a divine treat that works like magic to turn my skin from “Ew” to “Ah” in one application. It also smells like what I imagine a sugar plum fairy to smell like – sugary sweet and delicate. Who wouldn’t want to smell like that?

Available here for $34, it’s a worthwhile splurge if you are in need of effective, luxurious skin care to combat winter weather woes. And because the packaging is so fancy-shmancy, it will add a little glamour to your sink top. Just hide it when guests come around. They won’t be able to resist.

Friendlier skies.

logo_VADropping temperatures are directly correlated with my desire to escape the cold East Coast. It’s been this way for as long as I can remember, and as I get older, it doesn’t get any easier. This is especially true when killer deals like these from Virgin America come along. With one way fares as low as $45 (plus taxes and fees, of course), I’m going to find it difficult to not book a trip to Los Angeles or Las Vegas…

Modern Stretch High-Waist Tube Skirt, $59.50

Modern Stretch High-Waist Tube Skirt, $59.50

I know I’ve already mentioned my upcoming birthday (Editor’s note: I’m really sorry – this may or may not be the last time I self-promote), and I’m having a little trouble deciding what to wear. All those dresses are awesome options, but I’m leaning more towards this insanely hot skirt from Express. Reminiscent of the bandage dresses made popular by the Hérve Léger brand, it’s a much tamer (and affordable!) option than those leaves-nothing-to-the-imagination (and no-room-for-dessert) numbers. Made from a figure-friendly (and birthday cake-forgiving) blend of rayon, nylon and spandex, it’s a great option if you’re like me and not willing to fork over a few hundred dollars for Léger’s high-waisted skirt for a trend that might not last ’til your next birthday. At a tenth of the price, it’s certainly more wallet-friendly. And sure, we’ve all been taught to steer clear from horizontal stripes, but when pared with a neutral top, the body-skimming cut of the skirt works with your body and not against it.
