She shoots, she scores!

If only it wasn't so hard to save!

This little piggy went save, save, save!

As much as it bothers me to admit that it got the best of me, the recession in this country has encouraged me to cut way back on frivolous spending. I remember many a day where I’d count the hours until my paycheck would refill my depleted bank account, and the hours I’d spend stressed and frazzled over not being able to afford coffee, let alone meals for the rest of the week (without hitting up my AmEx account). I wasn’t in the poorhouse, but I spent money like it was going out of style.

At the risk of sounding gloomy (I’m going for reflective!!), it’s sometimes the hardest of times that teach us the best lessons. Nowadays, I’m more likely to think about responsible ways to save my money versus the dozens of stores at which I want to shop. Perhaps it’s age that has taught me such important lessons, but I’m also crediting our nation’s economic suffering. Have any of you Chic Thrills readers reevaluated your spending habits? If so, what have you done? Check out my own current financial diet and go ahead – chime in with your ways to live well and spend wisely…

Daily Diamond: fjs decorative pillows

November 6th, 2009 by Catherine

When I first moved to Manhattan, I was so slammed with bills coming at me from every direction (movers! groceries! new furniture! paint!) that my head would spin every time I went to my mailbox, which is precisely why my roommate and I opted for a cheap and cheerful sofa when time came to furnish our (teeny!) living room. After we settled on a basic model, we set aside some cash to spruce it up with major pillow of every shape, size, color and texture, transforming our otherwise boring sofa into a comfy conversation piece!

That’s the thing about decorating on a dime – you can take affordable staples and transform them with eye-catching accessories. The same can be said about your clothes, too. A mix of high- and low-end wares can, in my humble opinion, look full of style and class. Take these incredible pillows by home designer Francis Jens Spitta. Inspired by a “hippie shirt in his mother’s closet”, the ikat and floral-print pillow will look both charming and sophisticated against most neutral sofas. Don’t you just love the contrasting prints on each side of the cushion? And because there are plenty of colors within the print to choose from, you can further plump up your couch with a bunch of more affordable pillows.

With all this comfort and style around us, we’ve found a new spot to hibernate this winter.

Miso black cod.

Miso soybean paste

Miso soybean paste

As a staple of Japanese cuisine, miso soybean paste is one of my favorite ways to flavor meals. Commonly used for soups, this fermented soybean paste adds depth to fish, poultry and meats in dressings and marinades, but is also super affordable and widely available.

I love to pair the paste with black cod. The fish steeps up the sweetness of the miso creating a divine, rich taste. Now, the typical black cod with miso recipe takes about two to three days to prepare as the fish and miso are to marinade for over 48 hours. However, I’ve created my own quick recipe that not only saves time, but money too.

I purchase a bag of frozen cod from Costco or Wegmans for about $10-$13. On the cheaper side, cod usually costs about $5 per two servings; the bag has five servings, which saves me about $12 or so.

Quick and simple, I thaw the fish in the refrigerator as I work during the day. When I get home, I wash the fillet, pat it dry, and put a thin coat of miso on each side. I let it sit for about 10 minutes then bake for 10-15 minutes at 400 degrees. It doesn’t quite look like the inspirational image above, but that’s what I’m going for. I pair with whatever starch and veggie I have and voila, magnific!

Exclusive for Chic Thrills readers…

November 6th, 2009 by Catherine

I tend to stick to favored routines when it comes to everything – morning habits, skincare, running routes, even how I take my coffee. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a creature of habit, but even chicks like me need to deviate once in a while. I’ve long purchased my favored hair products from a few stores in my neighborhood, each one stocked with the brands I love. And while I’m all about mass-market shampoos, I tend to remain picky when it comes to my conditioner and styling products. My hair, like myself, gets fickle when routines get broken.

It seems like the folks at Lock & Mane are fickle about hair products, too. Have you heard about this website yet? No?
