Something to warm up the new house.

November 2nd, 2009 by Catherine

A dear friend of mine recently moved apartments in Manhattan, and I’ve been on the hunt for a practical and stylish housewarming present. Because she’s got limited space (it’s New York – nobody has enough space!) and two roommates, I can’t go overboard on price or size (even though she deserves the moon!). I’ve made a few choices and think the selection below manages to nail my quest for the perfect gift. Everything is under $15, perfectly cheeky, and available at Urban Outfitters stores and online.

My boyfriend and I are salivating over this stylish sleeper. Perfect for our extra bedroom, the Finn Lounger from CB2 converts into an extra bed with a comforter and twin sheets. The Scandanavian straight lined design and neutral fabric bring modern design to any space. We’re definitely saving our pennies so our couch surfers can be more comfortable.

I saw the sign.

The Virgin Megastore space at One Union Square South is the future location Nordstrom's Rack, opening next spring.

I saw the sign hanging prominently in Union Square announcing Nordstrom Rack’s arrival to New York City. It opened my eyes to new affordable shopportunities in USQ that will seriously change where I purchase my essentials. Attracting the recessionista crowd, the thriving 14th street shopping row notorious for steals and deals is now teeming with chic thrills.

Located at One Union Square South (the old Virgin Mega store location), the new home will carry the same brands and styles as Nordstrom, but at 50% to 60% off their original prices.

Nordstrom already operates eight full-line stores and three Racks in the tri-state area. The new shop between Broadway and Fourth Avenue will span 32,136 square feet.

After blowout and styling

Starting the day out right, Self Salon lifted the spirit with a DJ spinning retro 70′s and 80′s records in honor of Halloween. Right off the beaten path of Bedford Avenue, Self is nestled in the heart of Williamsburg at 147 Grand Street.

Homegrown with the help of her handy husband, seven month pregnant Maria Barca opened the space nearly six years ago. Mixing the old with the new, Barca expanded the space and left the original first-half of the salon and freshened the new back work space with white walls and floors and mirrors. Splashes of color adorn the space from fresh artwork and flowers. The creative hairstylists hale from across the country with intrinsic experiences. Originally from Seattle, my hairstylist Delores consulted me on my hair and gave me tips on how to make my thin limp hair appear voluminous.

She used a drying shampoo and thoroughly massaged my locks to balanced perfection. After blowing out my hair, she used the curling iron to build body and add texture. Delores loosened the curls and shaped individual areas with a round brush and blow dryer; the look was locked into place with flexible hair spray.

Getting a good wash and blowout is a simple luxury that’s well deserved every once in awhile. Starting at $35, escape the day and treat your SELF to a chic look at a relaxing salon.
