Like, Totally the Kindest Guacamole I’ve Ever Tasted.

October 27th, 2009 by Ruth

ac dipYou may have realized that we here at Chic Thrills like to eat, drink, and entertain. As a vegetarian, one of my favorite things to do is wow carnivores with alternative veggie-friendly versions of their meaty favorites. Recently, I have gone from vegetarian to vegan, just in time for the release of Alicia Silverstone’s (yes, Cher from Clueless) The Kind Diet, a guide and recipe book on how to live a healthy, more animal-friendly lifestyle.

In the spirit of football season, I tried out this recipe for Alicia’s “cheezy, oozy guacamole bean dip.” Not only did it hit the spot, but my skeptic “what-does-a-vegan-eat-anyway” friends were blown away by how delicious it was. Even if you’re not about to convert to a vegan lifestyle, you’ll love how flavorful and delicious this recipe is. As if! (more…)

Cake Stand Redux.

October 26th, 2009 by Catherine

Last week, Ruth mentioned her newfound love for the charming home addition of a cake stand. I couldn’t agree more – they’re a great, affordable way to display baked goods, but have you considered using yours outside the kitchen? When placed atop a dresser, coffee table or hall stand, they make a great spot to stash keys, jewelry, books, even remote controls. So when you’re not showcasing your prized baked goods, why not extend its use to another room in your house? And while you’re thinking about this, check out my pick for sweetest cake stand, available here for $19.99.

Twinkle, twinkle.

Our East Coast weather has taken a turn for the very worst. It’s damp. It’s dreary. The wind is blowing so hard, leaves aren’t even getting the chance to fall – they’re swept up and away completely! When it gets like this, all I want to do is reach for my warmest sweater, comfiest leggings and plushest socks, but with events aplenty to go to, I’ve got no choice but to face Mother Nature’s wrath with sequins. Mama Maisie’s Shortbread

October 26th, 2009 by Catherine

I love nothing more than to catch up with a good friend over a cup or tea or coffee. Much more affordable than cocktails out and a heck of a lot more intimate than a crowded bar, sitting down for a proper chat, to me, is just retro lovely.

Fleur de Lys Cup and Saucer, $10

Fleur de Lys Cup and Saucer, $10

While browsing one of my favorite stores for vintage-inspired home goods, I came across this adorable tea cup and saucer, perfect for my next sit-down. I adore Anthropologie for its extensive selection of brands, none of which seem over-produced, and would love nothing more than to stock my kitchen with these sweet designs.

I suggest you invite an old friend around for a reunion soon! And to further impress, why not whip up an easy-peasy batch of shortbread? I begged my mom for her family’s old recipe and have spelled it out for you after the jump. I hope you like it as much as I did growing up!

Pumpkin Pancakes

One of my favorite ways to spend a Sunday morning with my boyfriend is to whip up a big pancake breakfast. And although we don’t get too many chances to have lazy brunches, it’s a total treat (and great excuse to indulge a little bit!). One of the most resounding lessons I’ve learned in my years of pancake-making is to always cool down the griddle or pan between batches. Do so by swirling cold water from the tap in the pan, then towel dry before moving on to the next group. Another lesson? Dry, prepared batter is just as good as the made-from-scratch-cakes. So to save time (and unnecessary elbow grease), I’ve always used Bisquick or Aunt Jemima‘s mixes, without noticing a difference in flavor or quality.

And while I’m no Betty Crocker, I really do appreciate a great pancake. So when I heard about mixes from Austin’s famous Kerby Lane Cafe, I made it my Wednesday mission to get my hands on their new offerings to recreate those great breakfasts at home. Voted “Best Breakfast” in Austin, I held high hopes that their Pumpkin Pancake Mix would make my Sunday complete (even if the Jets did lose later on – sorry, boyfriend).

The mix was as delicious as I’d hoped it would be, too. Served with real maple syrup (boyfriend wouldn’t have it any other way), the cakes weren’t overly sweet, but man did they fill us up. The one-pound bag made tons of pancakes, and cost less than $6. Besides, breakfast at home is always a much nicer treat than waiting in line for a table at our local diner.

Medicinal hotties.

I’ve been struck with a terrible cold, leaving me with the chills and a dreadfully runny nose. But with the help of an old-fashioned hot toddie, I’ve managed to ease the symptoms of this wretched bug. Adapted from Sandra Lee’s recipe, I’ve nursed myself back to health with some good old fashioned whiskey!
