Sack it.

October 30th, 2009 by Ruth

Make that simple bottle of wine you’re gifting extra special with a wine bag. I purchase them in advance and keep them on hand so I’m always prepared. Of course I’m all for supporting artisans and rely on Etsy.com for truly unique finds. Here are a few of my favorites I sack my bottles of wine in.

Sophisticated and undeniably chic, Ted Baker of London celebrates his 21st anniversary with traditional British design. Ted’s scrumptious shoes are feminine, sexy and stylish. The Hania, Barb and Elki are my favorites from the fall collection. The bow on the back of the Hania is just darling; the Barb boots are classy and can be paired with jeans or a pencil skirt; and the Elki are stunning with skinny jeans and perfect for a night out on the town.

Ted Baker shoes and apparel are available at Zappos.com. As many of you know, Zappos frequently runs sales so if you don’t have extra cash stashed, wait until the price is reduced, that is, if you can wait to snag these shoes from the Baker man.

Pumpkin bread – Rachael Ray style.

October 30th, 2009 by Ruth

pumpkin bread

I am a sucker for the Trader Joe’s end-caps. You know, the ones where they prominently display pure seasonal deliciousness for all to salivate over. My heart told me that I must have the pumpkin bread mix and pumpkin butter (for icing of course) so I put my future loaf in the cart and took them home with me.

To my dismay, the side-of-the-box recipe called for 1 cup of vegetable oil and I was bummed because I didn’t have any. I searched my cupboard high and low for the applesauce substitute but could not find any and that’s when I remembered yesterday’s Rachael Ray episode – I could use any liquid instead of the vegetable oil!

The jar of pumpkin butter caught my eye and I knew Rachael would be proud if I used it. Therefore, I used 1 cup of the ooey-gooey spicy butter instead of the vegetable oil and was thrilled with the end result. I made a loaf of pumpkin bread and a tray of cupcakes topped with pumpkin butter instead of icing and boy, was it delicious!

e-commerce.

h&m

As Luckymag.com and Grazia mentioned, my prayers have been answered and finally clothiers, H&M and Zara are on the road to adopting e-commerce! However, H&M won’t be live until August 2010 and Zara should be up and running by this winter! Get your charge cards ready!

Now if only someone would speak to Century 21 about this, that would be great!

Daily Diamond: REFINERY Post Shave Balm

October 29th, 2009 by Catherine

When my boyfriend and I first started dating, he was very much a “toothpaste, body wash and deodorant” kind of guy. Little did he know that there was a whole new world of grooming products outside the Irish Spring aisle. My first job out of college had me repping some fantastic men’s brands, a few of which my main squeeze still counts as his top picks for keeping him so handsome. To watch his evolution from “whatever works” to “these grains seem to provide a gentler scrub” was shocking (to say the very least) but also slightly odd, given the fact he didn’t know men needed anything more than the abovementioned items. And while he dutifully tried everything I brought home (hey, I needed to know what worked and what didn’t so I could properly do my job), it quickly became clear that his Irish Spring was here to stay.

Awesome skin saver - $53

Awesome skin saver - $53

The only product that remained in our trial-and-error ways was one from cult English brand REFINERY. The brand, originating from London’s flagship men’s-only spa, is incredibly therapeutic and targeted in its approach to skincare. Highly effective and simple in its offerings (hurrah! No more confusing labels to try and understand!), their Post Shave Balm has transformed my boyfriend’s skin from troubled and angry after shaving, to clear and soft. At $53 a bottle, it’s a splurge he’s careful about, but still a product he can’t live without.

Madder About Red.

October 29th, 2009 by Ruth

For a large portion of my life I have been a blonde. When I was a little girl, my hair’s natural color bordered on the line of light brown and blonde, but when I discovered professional highlights, less and less brown remained. About a year ago, after being told all my life I had a similar look to Lindsay Lohan (circa Parent Trap days) I decided to dye my hair red. Surprisingly enough, I loved the color, but it faded faster than Lohan’s career. I decided to give red a-go again, but this time I was armed with Aveda’s Madder Root Shampoo and Color Conditioner. This stuff really works, especially the conditoner. I could have sworn one morning when I got out of the shower my hair even looked a bit redder.

In addition to being a color protector, the shampoo and conditioner contain color deposits, adding an extra boost. The shampoo costs $26.50 but it’s a HUGE bottle and the conditioner will run you about $17.00 for an 8.5 ounces. No fear bottle blondes and brunettes, Aveda’s got help there for you too!

Mom's Swarvoski earrings

I was seriously obsessing over a pair of Swarvoski earrings I saw at the Jersey Shore Premium Outlets and for about five minutes, my mother and I discussed whether or not the $90 set was worth the purchase. About two seconds before justifying the unneccessary splurge, my mom remembered she had a pair of Swarvoski earrings that she wore to my Bat Mitzvah, which was over ten years ago! I instantly remembered the gaudy pineapple-looking gems and reluctantly rode my mother’s wave of enthusiasm all the way home to her jewelry box.

She excitedly pulled them from the wooden jewelry box and enthusiastically encouraged me that despite their size and design, I could pull them off. With confidence and poise, I decided to wear the bigger than life baubles and paired them with a sea green dress I was planning on wearing to a wedding.

Surprisingly enough, I felt like a queen as I finished putting the earrings on. Because of the unique cut of the crystal, the earrings pick up and reflect whatever color is being worn and with my long hair and neck, I was able to pull them off. You know what they say, “Never judge a book by it’s cover” – the least you can do is try it on for size!
