Daily Diamond: Ray-Ban Wayfarers

August 17th, 2009 by Catherine

6219-1020639-dAt the start of this summer my boyfriend presented me with a pair of Ray-Bans for a start-of-summer surprise. Bright and sunshine-y yellow, they instantly perk me up every time I slip them on and have definitely brightened this soggy summer we’ve had on the east coast. But the most impressive thing about these shades is how flattering they are on everyone who tries them on. They seem to suit every face shape, but beyond that, they’re just a cheery twist on the classic ’60s staple. I have no intention of stashing these as the weather starts getting cooler – these will be my go-to for dreary winter mornings to keep me looking bright despite the chill!

Gaga for grapes.

August 17th, 2009 by Catherine

What’s a girl to do when she’s got a gaggle of friends coming over for dinner and drinks, but doesn’t want to spend a fortune? Ah, yes… Turn to the pages of Elle for a little entertaining advice from fashion royalty Tory Burch. In September’s issue, Tory opens up her New York apartment for a little chat about her designs and her personal take on entertaining. Burch, having first rocketed into fashion fame with her iconic Reva flats, has solidified her place in amongst fashion’s elite with pretty, preppy staples and elegant evening wear, all fused with maximum style and impeccable tailoring.

But I digress.

The true reason I’m gushing about Tory today is over her caterer’s recipe for Roquefort Grapes. Courtesy of Manhattan’s Glorious Food, this recipe struck me for being incredibly simple yet amazingly high-end. I can imagine serving these amongst gourmet crackers and a selection of other cheeses and wines, with chocolates for dessert. Take a look at the recipe below and find an excuse to have friends over for some seriously delicious eats.

Glorious Food’s Roquefort Grapes

  • 1/2 pound Roquefort Cheese
  • 1/2 pound cream cheese (not gum based)
  • 1/4 pound pistachios
  • 1 pound seedless green grapes, chilled and free from stems

Directions: Thoroughly blend the cheeses, then cover and refrigerate for 2 hours. In a food processor, chop the nuts finely. Coat each grape by flattening a small amount of the cheese mixture in your palm then rolling the grape and cheese between both palms; transfer to a waxed-paper-lined pan and refrigerate for 3 hours. Roll the grapes in the chopped pistachios to cover completely.

Make your clothing budget go farther.

imagesWe here at Chic Thrills are always looking for ways to save a buck or two anytime we make a purchase, whether it’s a pair of killer shoes at Nordstrom or a bag of apples at the grocery store. Living well and spending wisely is, after all, our mantra. The folks at Lucky must be on to our cause with September’s “Maximize Your Clothing Budget”, a four page spread chock full of great tips on looking your best without breaking the bank. Below, we’ve broken down our top three favorite tips.

1. Make sure you walk on a hard surface when trying on shoes. Almost everything is comfortable on a rug (and shoe departments are almost always carpeted), but it can be a different story on a wood floor.

2. Spend the cash to have rubber soles put on all of your new shoes. It will double their life – and often save it, if you get caught in a storm. (Editor’s note: So true! Having lived in Manhattan for two years, walking everywhere, I lost count of the shoes I burned holes through. My shoe repair guy once tacked on some rubber soles to my favorite ballet flats, and I’ve never had that problem again with that particular pair!)

3. Follow your favorite brands on Twitter and Facebook. They’ll post coupon codes and special insider sales there. And sign up for store newsletters to get pre-sale discounts and info on new arrivals. But think about creating a second e-mail account to separate the updates from your regular mail – you’re likely to be deluged.
